Councilor Alexander Walker-Griffin

Alexander moved to Hercules at the age of six. He is a product of the local schools and the programs the city has to offer. Alexander attended Ohlone Elementary School, Hercules Middle School, and Hercules High School. He played basketball at the Swim Center for years, attended Day Camps, and various programs throughout his youth.

Alexander’s interest in public service started at the age of five when his late father would take him to city council meetings in Oakland. During President Obama’s 2008 Alexander watched President Obama rise in the polls and popularity and his mother would take him to different events in his area and instilled the belief that the government is there to serve the people. When Alexander was 13, he volunteered on Governor Brown’s 2010 campaign by going door to door to promote his message for a better California.

Since his days at Hercules High School, Alexander has remained active in his community. In high school, Alexander and his friends started Herban Movement. The team made reusable bags and cookbook hybrids. They won Best Junior Achievement Company in Northern California, Best Business Plan, and Commercial. This sparked his interest in protecting the environment. He formed his first waterfront clean up at the age of 17 and continues to make time to protect and clean the city’s waterfront.

After graduating high school in 2015, Alexander briefly attended Diablo Valley College, but tragedy struck and his father passed away the first weeks into Alexander’s college career. Now living with a single mother for the first time in his life, he was exposed to many different challenges. It was at this point, he decided he wanted to be a voice for others because of his experiences.

Alexander transferred to Contra Costa College in January of 2016. Since then he has held numerous positions. He was the President of Community Organizing and Political Action where he led the drive for civic engagement on campus. He joined the student government as a Senator then becoming the Vice President and later a two-term Student Body President. During his time as Vice President, Alexander and his team started the college’s first LGBT+ Appreciation Day. As President, his team created the first free breakfast, school supply, and bus pass program. Alexander was appointed to the California Community College Board of Governors by Governor Jerry Brown to represent 2.2 million students and help govern the nation’s largest system of higher education. On the board, he voted to make community college tuition-free for the first two years.  He is also one of the founding members of Calbright College, the nation’s first 100 percent online community college.

Alexander has worked with elementary school students and seniors. He has worked in the public sector in the Office of Congressman Mark DeSaulnier and the Richmond City Council. He is a small business owner, works with autistic children, serves on the Hercules Education Foundation Board of Directors, and is a soldier in the California Guard.

Alexander is an avid skateboarder and foodie.
